1899 Silver Certificates

Silver certificates were printed to be used in place of much heavier silver coins. These certificates carried the value of the same amount of silver coin. In 1899 the use of the color blue on the seal and numbers was made official. Silver certificates began to disappear from common usage in the 1940's and 1950's.

These certificate are highly collectible and sought after due to their historic value. Condition helps to determine the value of the certificate. Uncirculated notes in perfect condition bring the highest prices. The rating system for condition is as follows; (CU) crisp uncirculated, (AU) about uncirculated (XF) extra fine, (VF) very fine, (F) fine, (VG) very good, and (G) good. The silver certificates were printed in a large size that is about twice as big as the currency we use today. The notes were printed in one, two, and five dollar denominations. The most common are the one dollar certificates. The five dollar certificates are the most rare making them the most valuable.
